In honor of National Cheeseburger Day today…September 18th, we wanted to explore the origin and the versatility of the Cheeseburger!

The Cheeseburger has evolved over time and has taken on many flavors, shapes and sizes. From the classic cheeseburger hot off the grill to the lighter “bunless” option, the sky’s the limit when creating your prefect cheeseburger. People have been changing it up for years using different meat options from classic beef to wild options like Boar, Buffalo, and Bison. Lighter versions have made their way mainstream with the use of Chicken, Turkey, Ostrich, and even a wide variety of delicious veggie options.

The historical journey of the Cheeseburger is certainly up for debate, as with any GREAT invention! One story reads that the first cheeseburger was created between 1924 and 1926 by a chef named Lionel Sternberger right here in Pasadena, California. The story is told of a passing homeless man who requested a slice of cheese be added to his hamburger order. Inspired by the cheesy request, Sternberger decided to add this option to his regular menu…and the Cheeseburger was born!

There other places that have claimed the invention of the Cheeseburger as part of their local lore and flavor. Louisville, Kentucky-based Kaelin’s Restaurant claimed to invent the Cheeseburger in 1934; however, the following year, the trademark for the name “cheeseburger” was awarded to Louis Ballast of the Humpty Dumpty Drive-in Restaurant in Denver, Colorado.

So we can’t be 100% Prime positive who first had the yummy and brilliant idea of slapping a piece of cheese on the top of the hamburger to create our beloved Cheeseburger. We do know that the Cheeseburger is an all American classic that has been enjoyed all over the world and continues to be reinvented each and every day.
